Oregon state's DEQ provides a wealth of information and studies related to reducing and diverting waste, and making more informed sustainable purchasing decisions. One of their most important studies related to this topic is the Popular Packaging Attributes. Their Materials Management website is full of great information.

US EPA has a number of important programs and resources for any business or individual who is trying to measure or trash waste in order to reduce or divert more waste. WasteWise is one of these programs. Waste industry and members of the public use EPA's volume-to-weigh conversion factors whenever they are estimating the weight of a waste stream from the volume of a container. If you operate a facility that generates a lot of food waste, check out EPA's Food Recovery Challenge and consider joining the hundreds of other companies and institutions that are participating.
